WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The U SPORTS No. 10 ranked Acadia Axewomen continued their early-season hot streak as they defeated Université de Moncton 3-0 Sept. 14 and Memorial Sept. 16.
It didn't take long for Acadia to take the upper hand, with local product Jackie Stevens rushing in to pick up a wide-open rebound and her first goal of the season against Moncton.
Acadia finally found their second goal when Jenna Boudreau (Halifax, N.S.) stole the ball from Moncton's keeper and directed it in with great patience. The Axewomen maintained the lead for the remainder of the half and started the second frame ahead 2-0.
Early in the second half, Boudreau forced another turn-over in close and weaved her way through several defenders before netting her second goal of the evening. For securing the victory for her team, Boudreau was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Axewomen goalie Spencer Skinner was confident in net all game and made four saves on her way to a shutout and her second shutout and win of the season.
Acadia Head Coach Amit Batra has been very impressed with the chemistry the women have developed with each other and their "uncanny" understanding of where they need to be. Their simplistic play-style has proved to be effective, but Batra notes they are still looking for ways to further enhance their game.
The Acadia Axewomen scored the only goal in Sunday afternoon's 1-0 win against the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The Axewomen have four shutouts in as many games played.
"We've started well this season but the game vs Memorial is the norm in the AUS and, no surprise to us, they came here and battled. It was physical and they defended well. I was happy with how we played but the MUN and Acadia match is always a good game," said Batra.
The Axewomen will be on the road in New Brunswick Sept. 22-23.
"Next weekend we head on the road to UNB, who are going to look to reset their season and our battles have always been tough as well. Going on the road to Fredericton is never easy and while their program has had some tough opening matches, pretty much every game has been close so we would be wrong to underestimate them,” said Batra.
“As for MTA, I think they showed yesterday they are improving quickly so we'll have to bring our best game on both days."
