The new Acadia Axemen baseball club split its opening series against Cape Breton University Capers Sept. 7 in Sydney Mines.
In the first game, Andrew Chase went two-for-three with an RBI, leading the offence in a 2-1 win for the Axemen. Starting pitcher David Pilat held the Capers to no hits through all seven innings of play, adding an exclamation mark to the launch of the club’s inaugural season with a no-hitter.
In the second game of the doubleheader, pitcher Tristan Reede went all seven innings, striking out seven Capers and allowing only two runs. Even with the strong performance on the mound by the 25-year-old right-hander, the Capers earned a 2-1 win over the Acadia Axemen.
Although this team is the first of its kind in more than a decade, the Acadia Axemen players worked well as a unit.
University baseball returns to the Valley Sept. 13 at Memorial Park in Kentville, when the Axemen host the Holland College Hurricanes at 1 and 4 p.m.
