According to co-coach Mike Reid, the Acadia baseball club is well positioned heading into the final weekend of the regular season Oct. 4-5.

For the second straight week, Acadia won three of their four weekend games Sept. 27-28 to improve their season record to nine wins and five losses, good for third in the Atlantic conference of the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association.

On Sept. 27, Acadia hosted Dalhousie in a doubleheader at Memorial Park in Kentville and won both games by scores of 7-3 and 11-3.

In the first game, the Axemen got strong pitching from Nick Tibert who threw the complete game, allowing six hits and striking out nine.

Mark McPhee, who reached base four times and scored a run, and Sam Gallant, who had three hits and also scored once, led the Acadia offence.

In the second game, Tristan Reede went four innings, allowing one run on three hits, while Andrew Chase pitched the final two innings.

McPhee again reached base three times, and this time scored two runs. Ryan McAree had three hits and also scored a pair of runs.

On Sept. 28, the Axemen welcomed Saint Mary’s to Memorial Park for a doubleheader. This time, each team won a game, with Acadia walking off with a 4-3 win, then dropping the second game by a 7-3 score.

David Pilat went the distance in the first game. Trailing 3-1 with one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Axemen erupted for three runs and the win, Mark Matyas accounting for the game-tying and game-winning RBI.

By the second game Sept. 28, Reid said, “the gas tank was getting empty from a long weekend of baseball.”

As a result, the defence “had a few let-downs” behind starter Wes Harding, who ended up allowing five runs in five innings, only one of them earned.

McPhee, who had a great weekend, contributed two doubles and drove in all three Acadia runs in a 7-3 defeat. Tibert had two hits and a walk and one run scored.

The Axemen face a tough weekend on the road to end the regular season – two games in Fredericton Oct. 4, followed by a doubleheader Oct. 5 in Antigonish.

Two wins at UNB will allow the Axemen to tie the Varsity Reds for second place, thus earning themselves home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
