WOLFVILLE - The Acadia baseball club settled for third place in the regular season following a win and three losses on the road on the final weekend of play Oct. 4-5.

The Axemen travelled to Fredericton Oct. 4 for a doubleheader with UNB that was to decide second place and home field advantage in the playoffs.

Acadia, according to co-coach Mike Reid, “struggled to score runs” and ended up dropping both games to the Varsity Reds by scores of 6-0 and 7-3.

Tristan Reede got the start in the first game and pitched well for five innings, allowing just one unearned run. UNB struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory.

Reede ended up allowing six runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out seven. Captain Ted Higa had two hits for the Axemen and reached base three times.

In the second game, Acadia took an early 3-0 lead, with centerfielder Jeff Hughes leading the offence with a double, triple and walk.

Nick Tibert pitched well, but according to Reid, “once again, the wheels fell off in the bottom of the sixth” when UNB scored six runs to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 lead.

The losses meant the Axemen will travel back to Fredericton Oct. 11 for the first two games of a best-of-three playoff series with UNB. Game three of the series, if needed, will be 1 p.m. Oct. 12 at Memorial Park in Kentville.

Acadia then travelled to St. F.X. for an Oct. 5 doubleheader that wrapped up the regular season. The Axemen lost the first game 6-2 and won the second 15-2, in Reid’s words, “sending a loud message” to the rest of the playoff-bound teams.

Andrew Chase started the first game for the Axemen and “struggled with his control,” allowing six runs on five hits and five walks over five innings.

Hughes and Ryan McAree led the Acadia offence, reaching base three times each.

In the second game, which was called after five innings, Matt Gendron reached base four times and scored three runs. Hughes, who had a strong weekend, had three hits, two runs scored and one RBI. David Pilat went the distance on the mound, improving his season record to four wins and one loss.
