Acadia's Tristan Reede pitches against UNB Oct. 11 in Fredericton. The Axemen can still make it to nationals by beating Saint Mary's in a best-of-three wildcard playoff series. The first two games of the series are set for Oct. 18 at 1 and 4 p.m. in Kentville.

The Acadia baseball club may have lost the battle, but they could still win the war.

The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Axemen twice Oct. 11 in Fredericton to sweep their best-of-three playoff series. UNB won the first game 8-4 and the second 7-0.

According to co-coach Mike Reid, Acadia “couldn't get anything going in their favour” in either game. In the first game, David Pilat allowed seven runs through four innings and took the loss. The Axemen mounted a comeback, scoring four runs in the later innings, but it wasn't enough.

Acadia had plenty of chances, but ended up stranding 14 baserunners. Tristan Reede led the offence with a single, double, walk and a run scored.

In the second game, it was all UNB as Acadia was held to just two hits, by Sam Gallant and Mark Matyas. Reede pitched the first three innings, allowing seven runs. Andrew Chase pitched effectively in relief, shutting out the V-Reds, but his teammates were unable to score any runs.

The Axemen now meet the Saint Mary's Huskies in a best-of-three wildcard series, with the winner qualifying for the CCBA national tournament Oct. 23-26 in Montreal.

The first two games of the series are scheduled for Oct. 18 at 1 and 4 p.m. at Memorial Park in Kentville. If a third game is required, it will be Oct. 19 at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.

Coach Reid points out there is no admission for the games in Kentville. He is hoping Acadia fans enjoying the Homecoming weekend activities will take the time to drop by.
