ST. CROIX, N.S. — The East Hants Mastodons will be doing everything they can to defend their Canadian Sr. Men’s Softball Fast Pitch Championships title.

The Mastodons suffered a setback Aug. 30 as they were shut-out by the Saskatoon Angels 2-0 to fall to 2-2 after four games.

The Mastodons will conclude the round-robin portion of their schedule with two games Aug. 31. The first game is at 12:30 p.m. against the 3-1 Elmira, Ontario Expos, and this evening at 9 p.m. against the 1-3 Prince Edward Island Summerside Eagles.

The top eight teams in the 10-team tournament advance to the weekend playoff round with the top four teams having to lose twice and the fifth through eighth place teams only having to lose once to be eliminated.

The Mastodons need a pair of wins if they hope to finish with double life in the top four as British Columbia and Newfoundland are already 4-0.

Thursday night’s loss was hugely disappointing as the Mastodons were held to a single hit while striking out 17 times.

Justin Schofield gave up a pair of runs in the fifth inning and suffered the loss.

Earlier in the day, the Mastodons won their second game of the tournament 7-2 over the Bulyea Rustlers from Saskatchewan.

Schofield relieved Travis Nevin in this contest and struck-out seven while allowing three hits.

Mark Johnson doubled and singled for the winners while Jay Duffy also doubled and Nick Shailes reached base all four times.
