The Yarmouth Pub Gateways went four for four over the July 19-20 weekend, sweeping doubleheaders from the Shelburne County Schooners and Hantsport Shamrocks and improving their 2014 season record to 12-4.
The Gateways came out of the weekend in a second-place tie, a point behind first-place Pictou, in the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League standings.
The Gateways kicked off the weekend by taking both ends of a Saturday twin bill against the Schooners, posting back-to-back shutouts against the new intermediate league entry from Shelburne County.
Luke Muise pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the opener, an 8-0 Yarmouth win.
Offensively, it was a balanced attack for the Gateways, with Russ Grant driving in two runs and six other Yarmouth players driving in a run each.
Next on Saturday it was a 14-0 Yarmouth victory, a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Aaron Nickerson and Damien Porter combined to allow four hits while striking out nine.
At the plate, Scott Jeffery paced the Gateways, going three for three with a home run, six RBI and three runs scored.
On Sunday the Yarmouth team defeated Hantsport twice – 4-2 in the first game, 7-0 in the second.
Colin Jeffery pitched a complete-game three-hitter in winning the opener, allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
Offensively for Yarmouth, Scott Jeffery drove in two runs and Aaron Nickerson and Russ Grant each had an RBI.
Tim Clayton went the distance in picking up the win in Sunday’s second game, striking out six and giving up only four hits.
At the plate for the Gateways, Darren Ogden, Chris MacDonald and Russ Grant all had multi-hit efforts.
Looking ahead for Yarmouth, the Gateways’ next scheduled game is Tuesday, July 29, at 8 p.m. in Clark’s Harbour against Shelburne County.
