The Wildcats doubled Halifax Mets 4-2 July 29 in Halifax, then dropped an 8-2 decision to Dartmouth July 30 in Kentville.
The Wildcats were a little short of pitching for both games. In Halifax, Mitchell Bunker made his Wildcats’ pitching debut and threw five-and-two-thirds innings, allowing only one hit (by Jordan Pelham, who will be accompanying the ’Cats to nationals in Regina) and one run with five strikeouts.
Christian Vogler finished the game in relief, allowing one run on one hit and striking out five.
Offensively, Nick Barrett scored a pair of runs, and Dryden Schofield singled, doubled and scored a run. Schofield’s double hit the top of the fence in left field, missing a home run by a matter of inches. Kentville had seven hits in all.
Against Dartmouth in Kentville, starter Bradley Fuller pitched four–and-two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four.
“We had no intention of leaving Bradley in that long, as he has thrown a lot lately, but we were short on pitching,” said coach Lyle Boylen.
Dartmouth led 3-1 after three innings and put the game away with a four-run fifth inning. Justin Beach pitched well in relief, allowing just two hits over two-and-two-thirds innings.
Barrett led a relatively meager Kentville offence with a single and a run scored. Bunker had a single and an RBI.
“(The Wildcats) played decently well, but we left the bases loaded in the first (scoring only one run), and unfortunately, stranded nine runners overall,” Boylen said.
“With a couple of breaks, the score could have been quite different. We needed a few timely hits, and a higher energy level is needed when playing a strong club like Dartmouth.”
