Head coach Jeff Cummins recently announced the addition of Obiang, a five-foot-ten, 235-pound running back from Ottawa and one of Canada Football Chat’s top-100 2016 recruits, to the Axemen roster for the 2016 season.
“Danny Obiang is a great back, and brings power and speed to the Acadia backfield,” Cummins said in a story on Canada Football Chat.
“Our Ottawa connections continue through assistant coach Pete Fraser who handles the majority of our recruiting.
"Once again, we have secured one of our best recruiting classes," Cummins added, "and we are very excited to know Danny will be carrying the mail for us for the next four to five years.”
According to the CFC story, Obiang recently completed a stint with Canada Prep Raiders. Prior to that, he played for both the Gloucester South Raiders of the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) and the Cumberland Panthers of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).
He has received numerous honours, including Raiders Rookie of the Year, an NCAFA all-star selection and two OVFL all-star picks.
“Acadia University is an amazing school with a great football program and a great football tradition,” Obiang said. “I chose to enroll at Acadia because it was the best fit for me academically and athletically.”
He was also impressed with the way Cummins reached out to both to him and his parents.
Another selling point for Obiang was the recent hiring of Luigi Costanzo as Acadia’s new offensive co-ordinator.
“I have a great amount of respect for him, as he has coached many good running backs who have succeeded under his mentorship," Obiang said. “I truly see myself working with him for the next four years. I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my life by learning everyday and working hard on and of the field.”
Obiang’s commitment brings to 15 the second, and latest, round of 2016 recruits Cummins has confirmed. The remainder of the recruits should fill several holes in the Acadia roster, particularly on the offensive line.

Patrick Ruvalcaba – A six-foot-one, 215-pound linebacker from Richmond, BC
Lawrence Williams – A six-foot-seven, 330-pound O-lineman from Nassau, Bahamas via Holland College.
Nicholas Diaquoi – A five-foot-eleven, 185-pound defensive back from Ottawa.
Jalla Lansanah – A five-foot-eight, 175-pound tailback from Ottawa.
Oliver (Ollie) Grant – A six-foot-five, 250-pound O-lineman from Halifax and Citadel High.
Alex Smith – A six-foot-three, 215-pound O-lineman from Moncton and Harrison Trimble High.
Duncan Steinhauer – A six-foot-one, 195-poiund linebacker from Airdrie, AB.
Carson Halliwell – A five-foot-nine, 190-pound tailback from Charlottetown via Holland College.
Quintin Milton – A six-foot-one, 250-pound O-lineman from Halifax and Citadel High.
Toby Girard – A six-foot-one, 205-pound defensive end from Prospect, N.S. and Citadel High.
Connor Brown – A six-foot-one, 190-pound linebacker from Ottawa.
Sebastian Finlayson – A six-foot-five, 305-pound two-way lineman from North Vancouver.
Aidan Cowan – A five-foot-eleven, 200-pound defensive end/linebacker from Ottawa.
In recruiting this group, Cummins and his staff literally went cross-country. Four recruits are from Ontario, three from Nova Scotia and two from B.C., as well as one each from P.E.I., New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Bahamas.
Some of the recruits are former teammates, and many were award-winners and/or all-star selections with their high school or junior teams.
Two, including Lawrence Williams, formerly played for Holland College, and lengthen the list of former Hurricanes who have moved on to Acadia.
