The Acadia football Axemen had a good start and an OK finish in the Sept. 20 game against St. F.X., but what happened in between wasn’t as positive in a 38-29 X-men victory.
“St. F.X. took advantage of a few early miscues by our defence, and our offence couldn’t really muster an attack after our first initial drive for a score,” Axemen coach Jeff Cummins said. “The second half was a better half, but we came up short in the end.”
Acadia opened the scoring on a three-yard touchdown run by Bobby Troop, but then gave up 17 unanswered points before St. F.X. conceded a two-point safety.
The first half highlight for Acadia was a 71-yard punt return by Eli Prochnau for a touchdown, which made the score 24-16 at that point. The X-men responded with a touchdown of their own to lead 31-16 at halftime.
In the third quarter, with Acadia on the march, Demetrius Ferguson picked off a Darcy Lavoie pass and scampered 50 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach at 38-16.
In the fourth quarter, Acadia got a one-yard touchdown run by Troop and two Ryan Begin field goals, from 44 and 36 yards respectively, to round out the scoring with 13 unanswered fourth-quarter points.
Lavoie and Jon Shaw combined to complete 22 of 38 passes. Jordan Koch had a game-high 137 yards on 10 receptions, and Troop rushed for 67 yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, Drew Morris had six solo and four assisted tackles.
“Penalties and turnovers were the key to our lack of success, and helped (St. F.X.) to a win on our field,” Cummins said. “It’s a process we’re going through with all the injuries we’ve had. We’re looking forward to playing them again in two weeks.”
