After being bested 34-0 under the lights at Acadia last fall by the Northeast Kings Titans, the Gators came out strong to start the season with a 35-6 victory.

“It’s a long season. We beat them last year so they came out really motivated to beat us,” Titans coach Reg Ogilvie said following the game. “We weren’t ready; that’s on me and the other coaches, that’s not on the players. They were ready to play, we weren’t.”

While the score was close at the half, as both teams were forced to play a running game due to the high winds, the Gators clearly dominated in the latter portion of the game.

“The boys played well for their first game,” said Gators’ head coach Larry Priestnall. “A few too many penalties, but we figured out who could play where and who wants to hit.”

With most plays plagued by flags – and a CK touchdown called back due to penalty – the Gators will have to work on their penalties, Priestnall said.

“It’s hard, especially with a group of kids who have never played football before. It’s a hard thing to go out and say, ‘Don’t go offside and do this or that’. But they controlled their tempers and we didn’t get any big penalties, we just had a lot of holding and illegal procedures. But we’ll correct that,” he said.

“We’ve got some things we want to work on, some things we want to throw in defensively, but offence was fine. I thought the defensive coaches did a great job adapting to the offence from NKEC. They scored six points on us but we were able to hold them off after that. It was a great team effort by all, coaches and players.”

The Titans, said Ogilvie, will have plenty to work on this week as they prepare to host West Kings.

“We have to tackle, we weren’t tackling and we weren’t blocking, that’s the problem right there,” he said. “Fundamental football – we need to play good fundamental football.”

West Kings, meanwhile, faced off against Dr. John Hugh Gillis High School and came out on the losing end of a 37-0 game.

If you go: Central Kings will face off against Avonview in Windsor Sept. 14, then have a bye week. On Sept. 18, NKEC will host West Kings in Canning at 3:30 p.m., while NKEC and CK will face off again Sept. 25, this time in Canning at 4:30 p.m.
