Huskies top football Axemen 14-3 in AUFC exhibition opener

WOLFVILLE - The Saint Mary’s Huskies topped the Acadia Axemen 14-3 Sept. 5 in Wolfville in the pre-season opener for both teams.

After a scoreless first half, Saint Mary’s opened the scoring with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Jacob Gesse scoring on a four-yard run from scrimmage to cap a six-play, 65-yard drive.

Ideen Samadi’s convert made it 7-0 Huskies.

Four minutes into the fourth quarter, the Huskies scored again, this time on a one-yard run by Ryan Zawacki that capped a 10-play. 77-yard drive. Samadi’s convert made it 14-0.

The Axemen finally got on the board with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter when the Huskies conceded a safety to make the score 14-2. The Axemen added a rouge in the final minute to account the the 14-3 final score.

Saint Mary’s had a sizeable 252-57 advantage in rushing yards, as Zawacki finished with a net 89 yards rushing on 12 carries and Gesse added a net 78 yards on nine carries. Gesse had a 37-yard run, and Zawacki a 30-yard romp.

D’Shawn Miller was the Huskies’ leading receiver with 62 yards on three receptions.

Saint Mary’s used three quarterbacks, with Trevor Erdmann completing nine of 13 passes for 89 yards.

For Acadia, which had 218 passing yards and 275 yards in total offence (compared to 389 yards of total offence for the Huskies), Eugene McMinns had four catches for 66 yards and Sabastian Robinson 43 yards on two catches.

Derek Wodz was Acadia’s leading rusher with 22 yards on four carries.

The Axemen used six quarterbacks - Thompson Richards, Jadin White, Hunter Guenard, Cody Cluett, Jackson Clayton and Nick Bynkoski - who combined to complete 18 of 33 passes.

Richards completed three of seven passes for 64 yards. Clayton was three-for-three for 51 yards.

Defensively, Taylor Barclay had six solo tackles for Acadia and Jesse Boudreau added five. Derek Naugler, Matt Cook and Jesse St. James each had four solo and one assisted tackle, and each of the three had one tackle for a loss.

For the Huskies, Simon Bell had two sacks and Kyle MacDonald one.

The Axemen will now prepare for their regular season and home opener Sept. 12, a 2 p.m. start on Raymond Field against St. F.X.
