“We had them training all year for this game,” said defensive co-ordinator Andrew Hartnett, following the championship game played at Acadia University Nov. 22.
“The ups and downs of the year served us well. We faced a lot of adversity, a lot of injuries.”
The Titans were the first team on the board, scoring a touchdown with five minutes left in the first quarter. The Gators made it a 7-7 match with 1:47 remaining in the first.
Both teams battled to find the end zone in the second quarter, but Kelvin Upshaw managed to give the Titans a 14-7 lead with one minute left on the clock. Upshaw struck again in the third making it a 21-7 contest with 2:23 to go in the quarter.
“The team made good blocks, let me get by and I did my thing,” said Upshaw, a Grade 11 player.
“It all comes down to teamwork.”
The Gators battled back in the fourth, capitalizing on a long pass to the end zone caught by Geoffrey Mullen, but the Titans sealed the deal with a fourth and final touchdown with 1:28 remaining in the game.
Titans defensive co-ordinator Devon Adams said NKEC was ready for the stiff competition from Central Kings.
“We expect to have some adversity and we always battle our way through it.”
Mike Ogilvie, a key runner for the Titans, says the team focused on remaining calm and playing their game.
“We ran the ball really well.”
Titans linebacker and running back Gavin Schofield said the key to the provincial victory had a lot to do with eliminating passing opportunities and strategic blocking.
The victory, he added, was a long time coming.
“Everybody really wanted that. Three years ago we couldn't get it but then we used that for motivation and it got us here.”
