Last year, it was the Football Nova Scotia Tier 2 title. This time around, the Bulldogs did themselves one better, taking the Tier 1 championship with a convincing 51-0 victory over Timberlea, the defending Tier 1 champs, Nov. 15 in Wolfville.
The decisive win capped a perfect 10-0 season for the Bulldogs, which according to head coach Rob Suffron, “has to be considered one of the most dominant seasons in recent memory.”
The Bulldogs won their regular season games 22-0 over Truro, 48-6 over South Shore, 19-0 over Timberlea, 37-6 over Halifax, 19-12 over Dartmouth, 62-6 over Fall River, a 6-0 forfeit over Cape Breton and 66-0 over Bedford-Sackville.
They then qualified for the final with an 11-0 semifinal win over Dartmouth.
Overall, the Bulldogs put 341 points on the board over their 10 games, while the defence surrendered just 30 points all season – an average of three points per game.
Most impressively, Suffron said, the Bulldogs “did not allow any team to score a special teams point on them all year” - no extra points, field goals or special teams touchdowns - “which is impressive.”
In the final, Owen MacRae, Matt Cote, Caleb Donnellan and Elias Jones had offensive touchdowns. Riley Comeau and Liam Sarsfield had defensive touchdowns. MacRae converted all the touchdowns, and added a field goal to round out the scoring.
MacRae was named the game’s Offensive MVP, and Comeau the Defensive MVP.
The peewees now join the atom and bantam Bulldogs in winning provincial Tier 1 championships for Valley Minor Football.
The bantams won the Tier 1 provincials in 2008, then went on to win the Maritime championship as well. The atoms won the Tier 1 provincials in 2011.
The 2015 bantam Bulldogs, meanwhile, will host the Bedford-Sackville Saints in the Tier 2 provincial final Nov. 21 at Acadia after a 34-7 win over South Shore Nov. 15 in Canning. Game time Saturday is 4:30 p.m.
The atom Bulldogs were not as fortunate, falling short in their Tier 1 semifinal against the South Shore Seahawks by a 9-0 score, bringing their season to an end.
