WINDSOR, N.S. — Hoping to capitalize on the mounting excitement over the upcoming Winter Olympics, Windsor's curling club is hosting a free learn to curl session.
Kelly Kitchin, the president of the ladies curling league at the Windsor Curling Club, said it's the ideal opportunity to try out Canada's beloved winter pasttime.
“Canada is a world leader in curling and it's a very Canadian way to get through the long and testing winters,” said Kitchin.
“You can pick up the sport at any age. It's cheap to play.”
Kitchin took up the sport in her 30s when she had young children. It gave her and her husband, Rick Kitchin, something to look forward to during the colder months.
“It's a great winter sport and it gets me out. I've met a lot of new friends because of it. It's absolutely wonderful,” said Kitchin.
On Jan. 12, the Windsor Curling Club will host a learn to curl night from 7-9 p.m., with childcare being provided free of charge.
Kitchin said all are welcome to attend as they're hoping to attract more people to the sport.
“It's a sport that you can play from a very early age well into your senior years. You can choose how often you want to curl and how competitively you want to curl,” said Kitchin.
All that's required to participate is a willingness to learn and clean sneakers. Instruction will be provided, as will the equipment.
“It's great exercise. It's one of the few sports that kids can play with and against their friends, parents, and grandparents,” she said.
When the Olympics are on, Kitchin said they often notice a surge of interest in the sport. She hopes by hosting a free event, people will give it a try and hopefully enjoy it enough to join the club.
“The decrease in active curlers is a concern but we remain positive that the support will bounce back locally. Clubs have always had their ups and downs but we need to spread the word,” she said, adding the Windsor Curling Club has a history that dates back more than 100 years.
