The biggest all-women’s soccer tourney in Eastern Canada runs until July 23. An estimated 130 teams are playing at fields in Wolfville, New Minas, Kentville and Port Williams.
Valley District Soccer Association executive-director and tournament organizer Dwight MacLeod has called the tournament a major influence in the development of women’s soccer in the Maritimes and beyond.
Baldursson was an (Acadia University) honours student, musician and all-Canadian soccer player, he noted.
“This tournament recognizes her outstanding citizenship, as well as her love for the game, and continues to inspire new generations of young female players, MacLeod said.”
Known as the Gunn, the tournament has adjusted its schedule to support Soccer Nova Scotia’s realignment of age groups and tiers. Based on age level and skill, teams are categorized in 15 groups from under-12 through senior women.
Not only do such tournaments develop players, MacLeod noted that tournament brings bring significant benefits to our local business community, as players, coaches, officials and their families spend the weekend in the Annapolis Valley region.
