The Acadia Minor Hockey Association handed out its year-end awards for 2010/ 2011 prior to its annual meeting April 12 in Wolfville.

According to AMHA president John Pettett, this was another successful season for the association, with more than 700 players registered - an all-time high.

Eight different AMHA teams qualified for provincials in their respective age and skill divisions, and while none there were no provincial champions this season, all the teams were competitive at their own level.

The AMHA hands out three sets of memorial awards.

The Canning Schooners oldtimers’ hockey team presents Jack Spindler Memorial Awards for a combination of sportsmanship and passion for the game as exemplified by their former teammate, the late Jack Spindler. Spindler, a well-known phys ed teacher, coach and supporter of hockey and other minor sports, died in a tragic mishap at sea in 2001. The Spindler awards are presented annually to one player in the Atom, Peewee, minor Bantam AA and minor Midget AA boys and girls’ division. Winners were Dawson MacPhail for the Atoms, Cody Burghardt for the Peewees, Connor Gough for Bantam AA, Bailey Huntley and Amber Steeves for the Midget girls and Spencer Ward for Midget boys.

The Dickie Moore Memorial Awards are presented in memory of former Kentville Minor Hockey player Richard (Dickie) Moore Jr., who passed away tragically in 1970 at age 16, to recognize outstanding sportsmanship and playing ability, which had been his trademarks. The awards are presented annually to one player on each of the Midget AA boys’ and girls’ teams. This year’s winners were Colton Harris and Victoria Duncan.

The George Dimock Memorial Awards, presented annually to the MVP of the Midget AA boys’ and girls’ teams, are in memory of George Dimock, who, prior to his death in 1973, enjoyed a lifelong passion for hockey. He was a talented player, a coach and a dedicated volunteer in the Canning area, and a member of the original building committee for the Glooscap Arena. Sadly, he passed away in September of 1973, just two months before the arena opened. This year’s Dimock Awards went to Cail Tait and Kendra Mansfield. George Dimock’s son, Tim, made the presentations.
