Hockey Axemen seeded fifth at University Cup, play UQTR at 1 p.m. Friday

HALIFAX - The Acadia hockey Axemen will enter this week's CIS University Cup in Halifax as the fifth seed in the eight-team national championship tournament.

The seedings and schedule for the University Cup were announced at 6 p.m. ADT (5 p.m. EDT) March 8, with the Alberta Golden Bears, the defending CIS champions and #1-ranked team in the nation all season, awarded the top seed.

The remainder of the field will be the #2 UNB Varsity Reds, the #3 Guelph Gryphons, the #4 Universite de Quebec a Trois Rivieres (UQTR) Patriotes, #5 Acadia, the #6 Calgary Dinos, the #7 Windsor Lancers and the #8 St. F.X. X-men, the tournament host team.

Acadia's first action of the tournament will be at 1 p.m. ADT Friday against UQTR, the Ontario East champs and Ontario conference runners-up.

Acadia had a regular season record of 20 wins, five losses and three overtime losses for 43 points, second in the AUS conference. The Axemen scored 111 goals, third in the conference, and allowed 76 goals, fourth in the conference.

Acadia had a playoff record of three wins and four losses, defeating Saint Mary's 3-2 in the semifinals before being swept 2-0 by UNB in the conference final.

UQTR finished tied for second in the OUA East division with a record of 19 wins, four losses and three overtime losses for 41 points. The Patriotes scored 118 goals while allowing 76, the same number as Acadia, in two fewer games.

UQTR went 6-0 in the playoffs before losing 4-0 to Guelph in the OUA Wilson Cup final March 7.

The University Cup gets underway March 12 with a pair of quarterfinal games, beginning with Calgary, Canada West runners-up, versus Guelph, the Ontario conference champions, at 1 p.m.

Game Two, at 7 p.m. March 12, features the Windsor Lancers, Ontario bronze medalists, against AUS champion UNB.

Acadia and UQTR meet at 1 p.m. March 13, with the late game that day featuring St. F.X., the host team, against Alberta, the Canada West champions.

The quarterfinal winners will meet March 14. The winner of quarterfinal 1 will play the winner of quarterfinal 2 at noon, and the winner of quarterfinal 3 will meet the winner of quarterfinal 4 at 4 p.m.

The bronze medal game is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 15, with the semifinal winners meeting for the CIS championship at 6:30 p.m.
