Hockey Axemen Thompson, Cazzola named AUS all-stars

WOLFVILLE - Four members of the Acadia hockey Axemen were recognized when Atlantic University Sport handed out its year-end men's hockey awards March 4.

Third-year winger Brett Thompson (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) was named a first-team all-star. Teammate (and linemate) Mike Cazzola (Guelph, Ont.) was named to the second all-conference team.

First-year Axemen Zachary Franko (Winnipeg, Man.) and Remi Giftopoulos (Ancaster, Ont.) were both named to the AUHC All-Rookie team.

Playing all 28 regular season games for the Axemen this season, Thompson finished with 19 goals and 38 points, leading the team in both categories.

His 19 goals was first in the conference and tied for first in the country, and his 38 points was second in the conference. Thompson had seven power play goals, and four of his goals stood up as game-winners.

Cazzola finished with 14 goals and 32 points in 26 regular season games, good for sixth in the conference scoring race.

Franko led all AUHC rookies with 12 goals and 30 points while playing all 28 regular season games. Giftopoulos, his sometime linemate, wasn't far behind with 10 goals and 23 points in just 22 games.
