In a second nailbiter in as many nights, Remi Giftopolous netted the game-winner for the Axemen at 17:07 of the third period, snapping a 3-3 tie.

The Axemen dominated the opening period in terms of shots on goal, outshooting Saint Mary’s 18-5, but running into a brick wall in the form of Huskies’ goalie Anthony Peters.

In contrast to game one, when Acadia scored first and the Huskies ended up winning in double overtime, in game two Bradley Greene opened the scoring for Saint Mary’s at 15:39 of the first period, assisted by Michael Curtis and Jeff Marchand.

Before the period was over, Acadia’s Brett Thompson was awarded a penalty shot, and made no mistake, firing it upstairs to beat Peters and tie the score.

In the second period, Matt Tipoff gave Saint Marys’ a 2-1 lead with his first goal (and first point) of the post-season at 3:31. Jamie Doornbosch earned an assist.

The lead lasted until Boston Leier scored at 16:06, assisted by Geoff Schemitsch and Chris Owens to tie the score at two. Shots on goal in the second period were 17-10 in favour of the Huskies.

In the third period, Liam Heelis gave the Axemen a 3-2 lead, tapping his own rebound past Peters at 14:04. Tyler Ferry and Mike Cazzola drew assists.

This time, the lead lasted just over two minutes, until Stephen Gillard scored for the Huskies at 16:31, assisted by Tipoff and Greene.

It appeared overtime might be looming for a second straight night, but Dylan Anderson set up Giftopolous for the game-winner with 2:40 left on the clock.

Saint Mary’s pulled their goalie in the final minute, but there was no further scoring.

Final shots on goal were 43-26 in favour of the Axemen. Giftopolous, Tipoff and Leier respectively were chosen the three stars of the game (with honourable mention to Peters for his 39-save performance).

Game three of the series is set for Feb. 22, a 7 p.m. start at the Halifax Forum. Now that there will be a game four, it will be Feb. 24, also in Halifax.
