Hockey Axemen win 4-3 in OT at UNB

FREDERICTON - Zach Franko was the hero for the Acadia hockey Axemen as they scored a 4-3 overtime win Nov. 15 at UNB.

Franko's second goal of the game after 2:05 of overtime was the game-winner as the Axemen (9-3) won for the second time in as many nights.

Acadia opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark of the first period, captain Liam Heelis scoring on assists from Alex Beaton and Matt Pufahl.

UNB evened the score in the final minute of the period, Philippe Halley scoring on the power play at 19:23.

In the second period, Franko gave the Axemen back the lead, scoring at 7:45 on assists from Mike Cazzola and Brett Thompson.

Again, the lead lasted until the final minute of the period, Philippe Maillet scoring at 19:33 to tie the score at two after 40 minutes.

In the third period, it was UNB that struck first, Maillet netting his second of the game with the period just 13 seconds old.

Thompson's power play goal at 6:40, assisted by Remi Giftopolous and Pufahl, tied the score at three, setting the stage for overtime and Franko's late heroics.

Final shots on goal were 29 for each side. Each team had one power play goal.

The win moved Acadia temporarily into a tie for second place with 8-2-2 UNB, both with 18 points, three behind first-place Saint Mary's (10-1-1).
