Hockey Axemen win fifth straight, 5-1 over Dalhousie

WOLFVILLE - Make it five wins in a row for the Acadia hockey Axemen, who improved to 12-3 on the season with a 5-1 win over the Dalhousie Tigers Nov. 26 in Wolfville.

The Axemen took control of the game early, grabbing a 4-1 lead after one period. Acadia continued to apply pressure for the final two periods, outshooting the Tigers 42-21 overall, but was only able to put one more goal past Dal goalie Wendell Vye.

Brett Thompson led the way offensively for Acadia with three goals, two in the first period and one in the third, to go along with one assist.

The four-point night increased Thompson's conference-leading goals total to 12 and conference-best points total to 24.

Linemate Mike Cazzola collected four assists for a four-point night of his own, improving his season total to 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists.

Geoff Schemitsch opened the scoring for the Axemen on the power play at 1:02 of the first period. Alex Cote tied the score for the Tigers with an even-strength goal at 3:40.

Tyler Ferry broke the tie for the Axemen at 4:39, just over a minute after Cote's goal. Thompson made it 3-1 at 7:44, then increased the lead to 4-1 with a power play goal, his second of the night, at 15:02.

After a scoreless second period, Thompson completed his hat trick with the only goal of the third period, an even-strength marker at 13:32.

Combined with St. F.X.'s 5-4 win over Saint Mary's in Halifax, the Acadia win allowed the Axemen to leapfrog over the Huskies and into a first-place tie with UNB (11-2-2), 6-4 winners over St. Thomas in Fredericton.

The Axemen and Huskies meet Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum in the final game for both teams prior to the Christmas break.
