Hockey Axemen take 3-2 shootout win at UNB

FREDERICTON - The top university hockey team in the country is unbeaten no more.

Zachery Franko had the only goal in a shootout as the Acadia Axemen upset the CIS #1-ranked UNB Varsity Reds 3-2 Oct. 30 at the Aitken Centre in Fredericton.

UNB opened the scoring on a goal by Cameron Brace at 19:02 of the first period, the only scoring of the opening 20 minutes.

Travis Randell got Acadia on the board with an even-strength goal at 7:55 of the second period, assisted by Mike Cazzola and Daniel Petterson.

Brett Thompson then gave the Axemen a 2-1 lead with a power play goal less than two minutes later at 9:40. Franko and Matt Pufahl drew assists.

The 2-1 lead lasted until the final minute of the period when Cam Crichlow replied for UNB to tie the score at two.

The third period was scoreless, as was a 10-minute overtime. Franko, the sixth and final shooter in the shootout, was the only one to score.

Brandon Glover turned aside 41 of 43 shots in regulation time and overtime as UNB outshot Acadia 43-26. Glover then stopped three-of-three in the shootout. 

The Axemen move on to face the UPEI Panthers in a 7 p.m. start Oct. 31 in Charlottetown.
