It was a night Valley Habs fans won’t soon forget.

The Montreal Canadiens NHL Alumni team was at the Kings Mutual Century Centre Apple Dome in Berwick to play the Valley Stars in a charity hockey game on March 22. The event raised funds for the next phase of development at the KMCC.

The arena was jam-packed to the rafters with hockey fans, dozens sporting the classic Montreal Canadiens jersey. Among them was eight-year-old Jack Garrett of Berwick, who attended the game with his dad, Andrew.

“I’m pretty excited,” Jack said, just before the Canadiens legends hit the ice for their warm-up.

When asked what he was most looking forward to, he said, “Just seeing Montreal win.” They did just that, outscoring the Valley Stars 10-4.

Jack said he’s a big Montreal fan and he enjoys watching them play on TV. His favourite player is star goaltender Carey Price.

Legend Guy LaFleur, who coached the Montreal alumni along with Premier Stephen McNeil, said it was a different experience and would rather be playing than standing behind the bench. However, he really enjoys the social experience of getting to travel with the Montreal alumni and visit different communities.

They raise a lot of money for good causes, he said.

“It’s something that we’re doing because we’re having fun doing it,” LaFleur added.

“Last year we played 50 games and we raised over $1.5 million for different organizations.”

He recalls that the Montreal Canadiens held a training camp in Kentville one year, early in his career. He said they really had a good time and being back in the Valley brought back memories.

Arena manager Bob Best, who has some NHL experience as a referee, said the turnout was “unbelievable.”

Best’s son, Mitchell, actually got to play on the Montreal alumni team. Mitchell is a Montreal fan and was excited to get the opportunity to share a bench with the hockey legends.
