Horton, West Kings off to 2-0 starts at D-2 girls' hockey provincials in Kingston

KINGSTON - The Horton Griffins and the host West Kings Wolverines were in the driver's seat after day one of the NSSAF D-2 girls' hockey provincials in Kingston.

Both the Griffins and Wolverines won twice on day one of the competition. West Kings opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Middleton. Caleigh Fayant and Erin Bak had the goals for the Wolverines, and Courtney Bell earned the shutout.

Horton then took on Bridgetown, and the Griffins broke open a close contest (1-1 after two periods) with a pair of third period goals for a 3-1 victory.

In evening play, West Kings made short work of the Hants East Tigers, scoring a 7-1 win. Horton then faced off against Yarmouth, and skated to a 5-2 win over the regional champions.

Action continues at 10 a.m. March 28 when Middleton takes on Hants East, followed by Bridgetown and Yarmouth at noon.

The cross-over semifinals will be played at 6 and 8 p.m., with the semifinal winners moving on to the provincial championship game March 29 at 1 p.m. All tournament games are being played at the Credit Union Centre in Kingston.

At the D-2 boys' provincials in Musquodoboit Harbour, host Eastern Shore was 2-0 after the first day of the tournament, blanking Yarmouth 5-0 and edging Hants East 4-3 in overtime.

In other day one action, Central Kings edged Dalbrae 2-1, then dropped a 3-1 decision to NKEC in the final game of the day. The round robin concludes March 28 with Yarmouth and Hants East meeting at 10 a.m. and NKEC and Dalbrae at noon.
