The awards banquet took place April 13 at the Port Williams Community Centre, with the Horton Griffins serving as hosts.
Lake was chosen from among a list of nominees as the girls’ division MVP. The Avon View student had 15 points, including 11 goals, in 16 regular season games, but was also cited for being an all-round student and a school and league ambassador.
Stevens received the Becky Cleveland Award of Excellence, an award based on a combination of athletics, academics, sportsmanship, citizenship and community involvement.
Other recipients of major awards included Mariah Carey of Horton as the top defenceman, and Maddison Reeves of Middleton and Catherine Morton of Central Kings, who shared the top goaltender award.
Cailyn Byers of Northeast Kings was the choice for Coach of the Year.
Grade 10 student Allison Clayton of Bridgetown was chosen rookie of the year and was recognized as the girls’ division top scorer after leading the division with 38 points, including 33 goals, in 14 regular season games.
Barrington received the award as the least penalized team. Horton was recognized with an award as the overall league champions, while the Griffins were also congratulated on winning the D-2 girls’ provincials.
The VHSHL girls’ division had nine teams this season – Horton, West Kings, Avon View, Middleton, Bridgetown, Park View, Central Kings, NKEC and Barrington.
The league’s teams also handed out team awards:
Avon View – MVP: Alisha Burns; coaches award: Natalie Rippey.
Barrington – MVP: Haley Stoddard; coaches award: Celeste Hatfield.
Bridgetown – MVP: Jocelyn Clayton; coaches award: Kitana Chesley.
