MIDDLETON - While it looks like the Valley High School Hockey League girls will ice 10 teams this year, the schedule doesn’t start until Nov. 10, so if you want to get a look at some of the teams in action, check out the Middleton District Arena Nov. 3 to 5 for a nine-team, 18-game tournament that includes one team from New Brunswick.
The Middleton Regional High School Monarchs Invitational is in its seventh year and team manager Tammy Belanger said fans can expect three days of great hockey. While they formed a team last year there was no league play. Middleton hosted their invitational tournament plus a fun tournament in March.
This year they have a young team with just one Grade 12 player, a few Grade 11s, and a handful from Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 for a short bench of just 14 players. But that includes goalie Ryean Emmett who has been with the team for four years now. They also have an exchange student from Italy.
Belanger said the Monarchs have a few members who never skated before this year, but gave high praise to their returning players who she said are showing great leadership and taking the young players under their wings.
The Monarchs had managed just three practices as of the first of the week, but should have been able to hit the ice on Nov. 1 to get ready for the tournament.
Taking part are Middleton, Tantramar, Barrington, Parkview, Hants East, Yarmouth, West Kings, Avon View, and Horton.
