WINDSOR, N.S. — It was touch and go for a while at the Hants Exhibition Arena for the Avon View Avalanche's girls' hockey team as the team played its final regular season game against the Park View Lady Panthers of Bridgewater.

The Avalanche and Panthers were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes on Feb. 19 and the Avalanche held a slight 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Avon View struggled to get strong offense around the Park View net and had trouble completing passing plays, while trips to the penalty box kept things tight - Avon View visited for 11 minors and Park View, which scored two power-play goals, took only three minors.

The Avalanche entered the third period looking to complete a perfect season at 17-0-0 in the Valley High School Girls Hockey League. Whatever head coach Rob Davies said to the girls during intermission worked as they came out ready to compete in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals thanks to Maddie Singer, Amy Lloy, Paige Parker and Makayla Kelvey. The final score was 7-2.

Savannah Hartt, who opened the Avalanche's scoring in the first period, added three assists and finished the season with 28 goals and 13 assists for 41 points. She led the league in scoring.

Brittany Poole, who scored one of the two Avalanche goals in the second period, finished fifth in league scoring with 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points. Parker scored the other goal in the second.

In previous play, the Avalanche won their 15th and 16th straight games of the season. They easily defeated Barrington 10-0 on Feb. 17.

Hartt scored four times while adding an assist, with Kelvey scoring three times and Poole scoring a pair. The Avalanche teamed up in the second period to score three times in 42 seconds.

Avon View also defeated Yarmouth 4-1 on Feb. 17.

Hartt registered three goals in this game, giving her eight goals in three games played over a three day period.

Maddie Miller also connected for the Avalanche, who were up 1-0 after the first period, tied 1-1 after two periods before the three unanswered goals in the third period.

Upcoming games

The Avalanche will be hosting the NSSAF Western Regional Championship Tournament on March 2 in Windsor.

Because Avon View finished in first place in the league, the Avalanche will watch Horton and Park View play at 1 p.m. The winner of this game will take on Avon View around 5 p.m. for a berth in the provincial girls Division 1 NSSAF Championship Tournament being hosted by Avon View in Newport at the end of March.
