Brette Pettet said she felt “absolutely wonderful” when she got the invite to attend a Canada National Women’s Under-18 camp in Hamilton May 4 to 8.

“It has been a dream of mine since as long as I can remember,” she said in a phone interview April 21. “So it’s very exciting.”

The 17-year-old forward is a student at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Minnesota where she plays on the girls' prep team, which won the U.S. U-19 Tier 1 nationals earlier this month in a dramatic final against the Minnesota Black Elite League team.

The victory was Pettet’s third national title with Shattuck-St. Mary’s teams

According to Hockey Canada, candidates selected to attend these camps are in consideration for the Canadian teams that will compete in a three-game series against the United States this summer in Calgary, as well as at the 2017 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship and 2017 Nations Cup, and Canada’s national women’s team.

“This camp represents the first opportunity for us to evaluate and connect with players in our development and under-18 team programs as they prepare for the 2016-17 season,” said Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs said in a media release. “This four-day camp in Hamilton serves as an important building block towards upcoming championships, and also lays out the expectations for these players on and off the ice as they aim to represent Team Canada.”

“I think everyone is going to be going into it quite nervous,” Pettet said about the Hamilton sessions. “ I hope I can get as much out of the camp as possible and learn as much as I can from the coached and the players I’ll be competing against.”

A hockey player since the age of five, Pettet has played with Team Nova Scotia and team Atlantic, but this is her first national prospect opportunity. Current Team Canada player Jill Saulnier is one of Pettet’s heroes, she said.

“I’ve always looked up to her. She played boys hockey through minor hockey – like I did. It showed me it was possible to play with the boys and achieve that success,” Pettet said of her fellow Nova Scotian. “(She’s) a great person in general – on and off the ice.”

Pettet will be back in the Valley to live and train this summer, before returning to Minnesota for her final prep school year. After Grade 12,  she has verbally committed to University of Wisconson, Madison, to play Division 1 U.S. college hockey. She plans to study science or engineering.

Truro’s Julia Scammell is also on the invite list, while Yarmouth’s Allie Munroe has been invited to attend as part of a   camp for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team
