Valley High School Hockey League presents season player, coaches and team awards

BERWICK: The Valley High School Hockey League has ended its season, but not before giving out awards to some of its players and teams.

At the league’s season-closing banquet on April 6, players, coaches and a volunteer were recognized with awards voted on by the leagues’ coaches or determined by season stats.

The John MacAskill Trophy for Player of the Year was awarded to Jake Gordon of the Horton Griffins. This award doesn’t just consider a players’ ability on the ice, but places particular emphasis on what they do off the ice as well.

Gordon, a graduating student, co-chairs numerous school committees and programs. He volunteers in the community at a local food bank and local church. He has achieved a lengthy list of athletic awards and is a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Respectful Citizenship Award.

Oliver Johansson of the Yarmouth Vikings received the Kentville Mazda League Leading Scorer Award. Johansson, a student from Sweden studying at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School, led the league in scoring during the 2015-16 season with 25 goals and 41 assists, to finish the regular season with 66 points in 22 games.

Yarmouth Vikings player Luke Emin was awarded the John Prall Goaltending Award, an award that receives nominations from the league’s coaches and is then voted on by them. Emin had a 4.34 goals against average, played 1,120 minutes and through his performance, it was stated when the awarded was presented, always gave his team the chance to win.

The Corey Chapman Memorial Trophy for top defenseman was awarded to Tyler Lapierre of the Avon View Avalanche. This was the most highly-contested of the awards with seven nominations. Lapierre was captain of his team and, it was stated when he was presented with the award, played in every possible situation and always led his teammates by example.

The MacAskill Trophy for Coach of the Year saw co-winners, with the award going to West Kings coach Clarke Oliver and Yarmouth Vikings coach Ronnie Jacquard. This award was voted on by the league coaches.

The Art Lightfoot Memorial Trophy presented for dedication and support of high school hockey was awarded to Joey Whynacht of the Central Kings Gators.

“I have been involved in the VHSHL for over 25 years as a player, official and executive member and I can honestly say that I cannot remember when this individual was not on the bench of the Central Kings Gators,” said league executive member Scott Russell, in announcing the award. “He always has a big smile and handshake for all opposing players and officials. He is loved by all CK players, coaches and alumni and he has been an integral part of the Central Kings staff for a number of years.”

This past season the VHSHL saw 12 teams compete. Horton defeated NKEC for the league championship.

In regionals, the Division 1 banner was won by Park View, Division 2 by NKEC and Division 3 by Bridgetown.

Six teams from the league attended their respective provincials with Northeast Kings (NKEC) winning the D2 title and Bridgetown winning the D3 title.

• Digby: team MVP Noah Thomas, coaches award Brandon Sullivan

• Horton: team MVP Cody Burghardt, coaches award Carter Davidson

• Middleton: coaches awards: Ned Brooks, Jayson Ward

• Northeast Kings: coaches awards Riley Matheson, Dylan Woolaver

• Par en Bas: team MVP Jaden Pothier, coaches award Nick Pothier     

• Park View: coaches award Sebastian Aucoin

• West Kings: coaches awards: Terry Trevors, James Hunter

• Yarmouth: team MVP Oliver Johansson, coaches award Steven Moore
