The win ensured the team would have home ice advantage when they take on the East Hants Penguins in the first round of playoffs in the Fred Fox Division of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

The Leafs trailed the Cole Harbour Colts 3-0 after the first, and 4-2 after the second. Fans were cheering the Leafs on, encouraging their pending comeback.

At the end of the first, the Leafs' Mitch Normore and the Colts' Kyle Morash duked it out, which rallied the troops.

“It looked like a really serious battle but it was just two big kids fighting,” said Brett Fletcher, the Leafs' assistant coach following the game. “It was a good fight and Normore got the better of him after he got all of his clothes off and untangled.”

Scoring in the second period for the Leafs were Alex Feltmate and Kyle Ritchie.

In the third period, the Leafs came out knowing what they had to do, with Connor O'Brien and Feltmate scoring to tie the game. Ritchie then scored to give the Leafs the edge and, in the dying minutes of the game, Colin Gillis secured the 6-4 win by potting an empty net goal.

Picking up assists were Gillis, David Hayes, Tyler Young, and Kyle Kavanagh – all with two assists each – and Seth Brison and affiliated player Cody Burghardt.

Scoring for the Colts were Mackenzie Young, Mitchell Hamilton, Brandon Beaulieu (unassisted) and Mitchell Binnie (shorthanded).

“We got off to a rough start,” Fletcher said.

Olafr Schmidt picked up the win in nets after relieving Connor Morrison near the end of the first. The pair faced 28 shots on net.

“We sold our goaltender out in the first period and didn't give him any support. And then everybody just battled back and we got the two points, and of course home ice advantage in the playoffs,” Fletcher noted.

The win guaranteed the Leafs a second place finish in the tight Fred Fox Division, and home ice advantage against the third place East Hants Penguins for the playoffs. Game 1 is scheduled to go ahead Feb. 20 at the Hants Exhibition Arena.

“We go back and forth with East Hants,” said Fletcher of their pending playoff games. “I assume it's going to be close hockey and it'll be exciting.”
