The tournament will feature six teams, five of which – Yarmouth, Horton, Bridgetown, Middleton and host West Kings – are from the Western Region. Hants East will be the sixth team in the field.

Action gets underway March 27 at 2 p.m. when West Kings takes on Middleton. That game will be followed by Horton and Bridgetown at 4 p.m.

The opening ceremonies will follow the Horton-Bridgetown game. At 6 p.m., Hants East will take on the winner of the West Kings-Middleton game. Then at 8 p.m., Yarmouth will play the winner of the Horton-Bridgetown game.

Day two of the tournament March 28 gets underway with Hants East playing the loser of West Kings and Middleton. Yarmouth will then meet the loser of the Horton-Bridgetown game.

At 6 p.m., the top team in Pool B will take on the second-place team in Pool A in one crossover. At 8 p.m., the top team in Pool A meets the second-place team in Pool B.

The winners of the two crossover semifinals will meet for the provincial banner at 1 p.m. March 29. All tournament games will be played at the Credit Union Centre in Kingston.

West Kings coach Rob Vidito was expecting a competitive tournament. “I don’t believe anyone has an advantage," he said March 22, "as the NSSAF takes care of the schedule and seeding.” At the same time, “it will certainly be nice to have a home crowd.”

Vidito believes “all the teams are strong, and have earned their way to provincials.” This includes his team, which lost at regionals to Yarmouth, the eventual regional champions, by a 3-1 score, with the third goal scored into an empty net.

The tournament, he said, “is highly represented by this region because the majority of the D-2 schools that have girls’ teams are from this region.”

His team, he said, “is looking forward to hosting provincials.” West Kings has not hosted this tournament before, “and having home crowds builds excitement. We’re looking forward to the local community coming out and watching great hockey.”

Horton, the top team in the VHSHL Girls Division during the regular season with 14 wins and one tie in 15 games, will play in Pool A with Yarmouth and Bridgetown.

According to team manager Geneve Newcombe, Horton is looking forward to participating in the D-2 provincials “in our first year as a D-2 school.” She added, “the top five teams at this year’s provincials have all had close competitive games with each other, so it should be a great few days of hockey.”

Newcombe predicted, “if Horton is able to bring their A game, we would hope to see them in the championship game, although with the calibre of this year’s teams, the provincial banner is within the reach of any of them.”
