Acadia in action: Homecoming weekend play sees mixed results for Acadia teams

WOLFVILLE - Despite strong second half, football Axemen dropped a 38-21 decision to Mount Allison on home field Oct. 17.

The Axemen defence held the Mounties to just one touchdown in the first half, but they found found other ways to score (four field goals and a rouge) to record 22 first-half points while holding the Axemen scoreless.

Cody Cluett, entering the game late in the first half in relief of starter Nick Bynkoski, threw second-half touchdown passes of four and 55 yards to Eli Prochnau and 32 yards to Brian Jones.

Mount A responded with an 80-yard punt return and a nine-yard touchdown run to maintain a 17-point advantage at game’s end.

Cluett completed 13 of 26 passes for 216 yards after Bynkoski had gone 3-10 for 35 yards in his time running the offence.

Jones (six catches, 99 yards) and Prochnau (5, 98) accounted for most of Acadia’s 265 yards of total offence.

Defensively, Drew Morris had nine solo and two assisted tackles for Acadia, and Will Wojcik chipped in seven solo and two assisted tackles. Jesse St. James had a pair of quarterback sacks, and Russ Rainey also had a sack.

The Mounties improved to 4-2 on the season with their second win over Acadia in three weeks, clinching first place in the conference with the win.

 

Weekend sweep for hockey Axemen

The hockey Axemen managed a sweep of their weekend games Oct. 16-17, edging Moncton 4-3 in overtime Oct. 16 before blanking St. Thomas 4-0 Oct. 17.

Rookie Kyle Farrell’s goal at 2:12 of overtime was the game-winner Oct. 16. Farrell had a goal and an assist in each of the weekend games. Captain Mike Cazzola had two goals and Dylan Anderson had the fourth.

On Oct. 17, Boston Leier opened the scoring for Acadia with a power play marker midway through the second. The Axemen then added goals by Anderson, Farrell and Sam Fioretti in the third period.

 

St. F.X. defeats Acadia 24-10 win

The St. F.X. X-women clinched first place in the conference standings with a 24-10 win over Acadia Oct. 18 in Wolfville. Both teams finished the regular season with 5-1 records, but the X-Women claimed the edge on head-to-head point differential.

Acadia’s trys came from rookie Courtney Foster of Berwick and veteran Tamara Dondi.

 

Hoop Axewomen go 2-1, losses for Axemen

After losing 77-74 at a tournament at UPEI Oct. 16 to Ottawa, the hoop Axewomen defeated Bishop’s 73-65 Oct. 17, then swamped the hoist Panthers 79-55 Oct. 18.

Against Ottawa, Allie Berry had 17 points and seven rebounds for Acadia. Emily MacLeod added 16 points, Paloma Anderson 15 and Chanel Smith 10.

Against Bishop’s, MacLeod had 19 points to earn player of the game honours.

Against UPEI, the Panthers took a 29-14 lead after one quarter, but Acadia won the second quarter 23-12, the third 21-10 and the fourth 21-4 to win by 24.

Berry finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Anderson added 18 and Smith 15.

The basketball Axemen dropped all three of their games at an Oct. 16-18 tournament hosted by the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa. Acadia lost 91-69 to Carleton Oct. 16, 79-68 to Bishop’s Oct. 17 and 83-79 to Toronto Oct. 18.

 

Soccer Axewomen sweep, split for Axemen

The soccer Axewomen improved to 6-1-2 on the season and took over first place in the conference by sweeping both weekend games, 4-1 over Mount Allison Oct. 16 and 6-1 over Saint Mary’s Oct. 18.

Against Mount A, Michelle Pryde and Kinsella Noseworthy-Smith each had a pair of goals to lead Acadia to victory.

Against Saint Mary’s, Pryde again scored twice. Meghan Earle, Jenna Howell, Katie Ross and Alexander Scovil added single markers.

The soccer Axemen, meanwhile, split their weekend games, blanking Mount Allison 4-0 Oct. 16, then dropping a 3-1 decision to Saint Mary’s Oct. 18. Acadia ended the weekend with a record of four wins, two losses and three draws.

Against Mount A, Sam Gillis, Matt Berrigan, Cochrane Noseworthy-Smith and Cooper Coats had the Acadia goals, and Nigel Goodwin recorded the shutout. Travis Fenning had the only Axemen goal against the Huskies.
