CK, the top D-2 girls’ team in the region, has yet to lose a league game this season. The Gators improved to 9-0 with a 72-54 win over West Kings on Feb. 12 in Cambridge, and with one league game remaining, could not be overtaken for first place.
CK led West Kings 26-11 after one quarter and 47-24 at halftime. West Kings made a game of it in the second half, winning the third quarter 16-12 and the fourth 14-13, but could not overcome the Gators’ early lead and ended up losing by 18.
Serena Dolan led all scorers with 20 points for CK, despite only playing sparingly in the second half. Emma Hachey added 15 points for the Gators, Katelyn Meister 10 and Katie Beaver nine.
For West Kings, Emma Picard led the way with 16 points, Jenna Ramsey had 11, Sam Nichols nine and Claudia Fulton eight.
Although the schedule and final list of participants for regionals had not been finalized as of Feb. 13, it was expected CK, Avon View, West Kings, NKEC, Park View and Yarmouth would make up the field.
Gators’ head coach Ben Hachey anticipated his team and Avon View would likely end up meeting in the regional final, though he pointed out, “nothing is for sure in girls’ basketball.”
The tentative schedule had games scheduled for 4 and 6 p.m. Feb. 20 and 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Feb. 21.
The D-2 boys’ regionals will likely be played in Yarmouth, also Feb. 20-21. As of Feb. 10, the standings had Yarmouth first, followed by Park View, Central Kings, NKEC, Avon View and West Kings. The Horton JV team will compete at its own regionals.
As was the case with the girls, the final seedings and schedule for the boys’
regionals had not be determined as of Feb. 13.
On both the boys’ and girls’ side, the top three teams from regionals will advance directly to provincials, with the fourth-place team hosting a provincial qualifier Feb. 27-28.
There will be no Division 1 regional championship, for either boys or girls, as Horton is the only school in the Western Region playing Division 1 this season.
The Horton boys will attend a qualifier Feb. 27-28 to attempt to qualify for provincials. The Horton girls, who are hosting their provincials, automatically advance without having to go to a qualifier.
