Kings County runners, jumpers and throwers more than held their own at the Western Region track and field championships May 24-25 in Wolfville.

A host of Kings County athletes earned top-three finishes, many successfully punching their tickets to the NSSAF provincials this weekend in Dartmouth.

New regional records set at the meet included Alex Rawding of West Kings in senior boys’ discus with a throw of 40.32 metres and the Horton senior girls’ 4x100 relay team of Scarlett Smith, Emma Rozier, Courtney Garland and Lauren Jodrey, who established a new record of 52.09 seconds in their event.

Individually, in senior boys, Kurt Getson of Central Kings was first in javelin, second in 400 metres and third in 200 metres, and also helped Central Kings to second place finishes in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Central Kings also swept the top three spots in senior boys’ shot put, with Jacob Shepherd placing first, Cody Holland second and Sam Jennings third. Justin Murphy of CK was second in discus and third in shot put.

In senior girls, Jessica Shaffelburg of Horton won both the 800 and 1,500 metres, Courtney Garland won the hurdles, and Jodrey won the 400 metres.

Emily Merks, Shaffelburg, Garland and Jodrey then teamed up to win the 4x400 relay, albeit not in the record time they managed at districts.

Carlena Eye of Horton was second in 3,000 metres, Rachel MacAlpine was second in high jump and Merks was third in 1,500 metres.

Also in senior girls, Sam Kennedy of West Kings was third in triple jump, Brenna Milne of CK was third in pole vault, Emily Lamb of CK was third in 3,000 metres and Central Kings was also third in the 4x400 relay.

In intermediate boys, Brock O’Brien of Horton won both the discus and shot put. John Hodder of NKEC won the high jump, and Owen Hebb of NKEC won the triple jump and was second in long jump.

Central Kings again swept the top three spots in pole vault, with Ben Best placing first, Matt Priestnall second and Lukas Kane third.

Tim Longley of NKEC was second in both the 400 and 800 metres. Eli Hughes of NKEC was third in 100 metres and fourth in 200 metres. Hughes and Longley also

helped NKEC to a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay.

Isaac Melanson of Horton was second in discus and third in shot put. Brayden Dunphy of Horton was third in 800 metres, and Horton took second in the 4x400 relay.

Other top finishes in intermediate boys included Anthony Jacques of Ecole Rose des Vents, second in high jump; Anthony Sabourin-Caron of Rose des Vents, third in 200 metres; Isaac Doucette of Rose des Vents, third in long jump; and Matt Cross of West Kings, third in discus.

In intermediate girls, Caitlin Nickerson of Central Kings was first in pole vault, while NKEC won the 4x100 relay and Horton the 4x400 relay.

Megan Vaughan of NKEC was second in 800 metres and pole vault, Gillian Cumby of Horton was second in hurdles and third in triple jump, Jackie Stevens of CK was second in 1,500 metres and third in 800 metres and Central Kings placed second in the 4x100 relay.

Hayley McDowell of West Kings was second in discus, Jenna Breckon of West Kings second in high jump and Meghan Nicholson of NKEC second in javelin.

Sarah Baillie of West Kings was third in 400 metres, Rebecca Morton of CK was third in shot put, and the Horton 4x100 relay team was also third.

In junior boys, Jack Penny of Berwick won the 100 metres, and Geoffrey Mullen of CK won the 400 metres and was second in the 100. Central Kings also placed first in the 4x100 relay.

Will Cross of Pine Ridge won the triple jump. Braxton Guptell of EMS won the hurdles, Jonah Vidito of KCA won the long jump, and Hayden Sarsfield of CK won the pole vault.

Coleman Hooper of EMS was second in 800 and 1,500 metres; Noah MacPherson of KCA was second in shot put and third in javelin; Ryan Turner of Hantsport was second and Lex Corbett of Hantsport third in pole vault; and will MacDonald of EMS second in 3,000 metres.

Griffin Abbott of KCA was third in triple jump, and the EMS 2 4x400 relay team also placed third.

In junior girls, Jane Hergett of EMS won the 400 metres and helped EMS to a first-place finish in 4x100 relay and third place in the 4x400 relay.

Hannah Fuller of EMS was second in 800 metres and third in 1,500 metres, while Jayda Veinot was third in high jump.

Earning third place finishes in junior girls’ were Maddy Ross of Coldbrook in 3,000 metres, Taylor Kehoe of Hantsport in 400 metres, Claudia Fulton of Pine Ridge in discus and the Hantsport 4x100 relay team. 

Overall, Central Kings placed second and Horton third in the senior team standings,  

Horton second, NKEC third and CK fourth in the intermediate division, and EMS was third overall in the junior standings.
