With Saint Mary’s in town on Seniors Night, the Axewomen dropped a 94-62 decision, and the male Huskies completed the sweep with a 90-74 win over the Axemen.

For the Axewomen, who dropped to 16-3 on the season, it was their third loss in their past four games. The Axemen, meanwhile, fell to 11-8. Both Acadia teams have one regular season game remaining, Feb. 27 at UNB.

In the women’s game, Acadia started strong, building a 28-20 lead after one quarter, but it was all downhill from there.

The Huskies won the second quarter 19-7, continuing a trend of poor second quarters for the Axewomen against Saint Mary's. In their two games with the Huskies this season, Acadia has been outscored 42-13 in the second quarter.

Leading 39-35 at halftime, Saint Mary’s then won the third quarter 29-13 and the fourth 26-14 to hand the Axewomen their most lopsided loss of the season.

Angelina Carvery led all scorers for SMU with 26 points, a total that included six threes.

Rachelle Coward (17 points), Emma Valikoski (13), Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (11) and Jenny Lewis (10) also reached double figures for the Huskies, who shot 41.8 per cent from the floor and made 15 of 32 three-point attempts.

Chanel Smith and Allie Berry had 11 points each to lead the Axewomen, and Berry added a team-high nine rebounds. Paloma Anderson was held to seven points, and Alyson Fulton added seven points off the bench.

Saint Mary’s, which improved to 18-1, officially clinched first place with the win. Acadia is assured of a second-place finish and the second first-round playoff bye, regardless of whether they win or lose at UNB.

Graduating fourth-year forward Jenalle VanHie was recognized following the game for her contributions to Acadia and the Axewomen program.

In the men’s game, the Huskies erased an early Axemen lead to take a 22-14 advantage after one quarter. Acadia won the second quarter 24-20, but still trailed 42-38 at halftime.

Saint Mary’s put the game away by winning the third quarter 26-14, and maintained their 16-point lead as the teams each scored 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Kemar Alleyne led all scorers with 23 points for the Huskies, including a trio of three-pointers.

Theon Reefer, Marquis Clayton, Alfred Burgesson and Will Fiander added one three apiece. All of the Huskies’ threes were in the second half, and at the most opportune times, with the Axemen threatening to narrow the deficit.

Reefer finished with 18 points, Brian Rouse and Osman Barrie 14 each and Achuil Lual 10. Alleyne and Barrie each had 10 rebounds and Lual and Rouse eight each for SMU, which won the rebounding battle 53-30.

Nick DePalma led the Axemen with 21 points, including five threes. Shaquille Smith added 16 points and Erik Nissen 12.

Prior to the game, graduating seniors Thomas Johnston and Shaquille Smith were recognized for their contributions to Acadia and the Axemen over the past five years.

With the win, the Huskies moved into a three-way tie with Acadia and UNB for third place with 28 points. UNB had two games remaining, Acadia and Saint Mary’s one.
