The Horton girls have been on a bit of a roll of late, winning tournaments on three consecutive weekends  in three different provinces.

On the Nov. 22 weekend, Horton was at a five-team round robin tournament hosted by Halifax Grammar School.

In capturing the tournament title, the Griffins went 4-0, defeating the host team, Booth Memorial from Newfoundland, Amherst and Dr. J.H. Gillis.

Horton’s Haley McDonald was named the tournament MVP and Jayda Veinot was a tournament all-star.

The following weekend, Horton travelled to Charlottetown for a tournament hosted by Colonel Gray, which according to Griffins’ coach Jennifer Veinot, featured “competitive teams from throughout the Maritimes.”

En route to their second consecutive tournament victory, Horton scored wins over Leo Hayes from Fredericton, Citadel High and the host Colonel Gray squad.

Coach Veinot pointed out that the Griffins’ 63-61 win over Citadel in the semifinals was the Halifax school’s first loss in more than 100 games. Horton, she said, “took its first lead of the game with 23 seconds left.”

The Griffins advanced to the final against Colonel Gray and scored a 60-55 victory to remain unbeaten for the tournament. Jayda Veinot was selected the tournament MVP, and McDonald joined her on the all-star team.

Horton then moved on to the Moncton Hoop Classic on the Dec. 6 weekend and faced another competitive field, this time including a team from Quebec.

The Griffins again emerged victorious, this time having to win five times to capture the tournament title.

Horton reached the playoff round with wins over St. Francois - a  Quebec team - Moncton's  Bernice MacNaughton and Moncton High. The Griffins then topped Riverview, N.B., 71-48 in the semifinals and Sussex, N.B., 76-55 in the final.

Jayda Veinot was named tournament MVP for a second straight weekend. This time, both Maia Timmons and McDonald joined her on the tournament all-star team.

Coach Veinot acknowledged winning three tournaments in a row is not only a great boost for the Griffins, but sends a message that they are a team to be reckoned with.

“We have several players scoring in double digits each game, which makes us difficult to guard,” she said Dec. 10. The Griffins, she added, “are getting great leadership, both on and off the court, from our senior players.”

Defensively, Horton is “trying to be aggressive, and play defence for the entire court.”

All three tournament wins “have been great team efforts," she added.
