The non-profit organization is seeking athletes to participate in a number of sports. The program aims to provide persons with intellectual disabilities with opportunities to participate in competitive sports.

“(Athletes) participating in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They improve physically, mentally and socially,” said Kings Special Olympics spokesperson Pat Nixon.

“Overall, participants make new friends and discover new abilities and skills that will serve them well in day-to-day life.”

The programming covers both summer and winter sports, with practices held weekly.

The registration for Kings Special Olympics programs is scheduled for Sept. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Evangeline Middle School in New Minas. A second session will be held Oct. 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greenwood Bowling Centre on the base. The cost is $30. Registration forms can be downloaded from the Special Olympics Nova Scotia website at www.specialolympicsns.ca.
