St. F.X. gets best of hoop Axemen, Axewomen in home openers

WOLFVILLE - The Acadia basketball teams both fell short in their 2014-2015 home openers Nov. 12 against St. F.X. The Axewomen lost 57-50 and the Axemen ended up on the short end of a 75-70 decision.

In the women's game, Acadia got off to a good start, leading 11-4 at one point before settling for an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The X-women came back to win the second quarter 23-11 for a 32-22 halftime lead.

After the intermission, the Axewomen scored 18 points to St. F.X.'s 11 to pull to within three at 43-40 by the end of the third quarter.

St. F.X., however, again regrouped, winning the fourth quarter 14-10 to prevail by seven points in an entertaining game.

Shannon Hatch led three X-women in double figures with 14 points. Lindsay Lessard added 11 points (and a game-high 13 rebounds) and Kayla MacIntyre had 10 points off the bench.

Katie Ross, who keyed Acadia's third quarter with some inspired play, including a pair of three-pointers, led the Axewomen with 15 points to go along with five rebounds, and was her team's Player of the Game.

Emily MacLeod finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Allie Berry chipped in nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The X-women evened their record at 1-1 with the win, while the Axewomen fell to 0-3.   

In the men's game, St. F.X. jumped out to 23-15 lead after one quarter, but Acadia came back to win the second quarter 25-11 to lead 40-34 at halftime.

The Axemen led by as many as eight in the third quarter, but St. F.X. fought back to tie the game at 48 midway through the quarter.

Acadia led 61-57 after three quarters, but the X-men finished strong, winning the fourth quarter 18-9 for a five-point advantage at the final buzzer.

Julius Antoine led all scorers with 22 points for St. F.X. Kevin Bercy added 16 and Cameron Walker 10.

For Acadia, which finished with eight three-pointers to four for the X-men, Shaquille Smith led the way offensively with 20 points. Rhys Larry finished with 14 points and 17 boards for an emphatic 'double-double', and was Acadia's Player of the Game.

Sean Stoqua added 13 points to also reach double figures in scoring. Ben Miller had eight points and Thomas Johnston seven, while Kyle Arseneault was held to just six points (on a pair of threes) in 32 minutes.

Despite Larry's rebounding efforts, St. F.X. won the battle of the boards 50-43, as Bercy and Walker finished with 10 rebounds apiece.    

Acadia and St. F.X. are right back at it Nov. 15, this time in Antigonish, with the women's game starting at 6 p.m. and the men following at 8 p.m. 

The Axewomen and Axemen then return home to host Cape Breton Nov. 21 and Dalhousie Nov. 22 on Shoot for the Cure weekend. Game times both evenings are 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.
