West Kings, Pine Ridge win regional badminton banners

AUBURN - West Kings and Pine Ridge Middle School both captured regional banners in the team competition of the Western Region badminton championships held April 10-11 in Lunenburg County.

The West Kings team of Brooklyn Sauve (girls’ singles), Cole Rafuse (boys’ singles), MacKenzie Bergquist and Sarah Houston (girls’ doubles), Rhylan Morse and Josh Carther (boys’ doubles), Amanda Furniss and Will Cross (mixed doubles) placed first in the intermediate team competition.

Bridgetown was second, and the Horton team of Maia Timmons, Yuan Fang, Taylor Kehoe and Jayda Veinot, Hayden Warzee and Zac Sharkey, Emma Murphy and Miklos Kanyasi placed third and also qualified for provincials.

In the intermediate individual competition held April 11, Miklos Kanyasi of Horton was first in boys’ singles, and Logan Levesque of NKEC was first in girls’ singles.

Brooklyn Sauve of West Kings was second in girls’ singles, and Cole Rafuse and Rhylan Morse of West Kings were second in boys’ doubles.

In mixed doubles, the West Kings team of Amanda Furniss and Will Cross placed first, and the Horton team of Taylor Kehoe and Yuan Fang was second. All these individuals and teams qualified for provincials.

At the junior level, the Pine Ridge team of Eden Bishop, Brandon Phuong, Ashley Ryerson and Meagan Strickland, Jackson Disley and Isaac Grass, Erica Rafuse and David Dospital placed first in the team competition.

Bluenose Academy was second, and Ecole Par en Bas was third.

In the junior individual competition, Ilona Kanyasi of Evangeline Middle School was first in girls’ singles, and Erica Rafuse of Pine Ridge was second.

Emma He and Michelle Song of Wolfville were first in girls’ doubles. Isaac Grass and Ashley Ryerson of Pine Ridge were second in mixed doubles.  

At the senior level, Ecole Par en Bas placed first in the team competition, with Park View second and Liverpool third.

Individually, Kings County competitors qualifying for provincials included Haruka Kashiwai and Jonah Brodeur of Horton, second in mixed doubles, and Anthony Jacques of Ecole Rose des Vents, second in boys’ singles.

The NSSAF badminton provincials were hosted by Ecole Par en Bas and Drumlin Heights Community School in Yarmouth County April 17-18.
