Jane Warren of Wolfville was chosen as Masters female athlete of the year, while David Bambrick, also of Wolfville, was named para male athlete of the year.

Ueli Albert, a Halifax resident who coaches the Valley Athletics team in Wolfville, was the male winner of the coach excellence award. Pam LeJean, one of Albert’s Valley Athletics athletes, was the choice for para female athlete of the year.

Warren, a thrower who competes in the 55-59 age category within the Masters division, took part in numerous competitions during 2014, including the Canadian Masters indoor and outdoor championships.

She was consistently in the top-three in all her competitions, including a variety of first-place finishes. At the indoor nationals, she was first in weight throw and second in shot put.  At the outdoor nationals, she placed first in discus, hammer and weight throw, second in shot put and third in javelin.

Warren ended the year first in the Nova Scotia outdoor rankings in all throwing disciplines but shot put, where she was ranked second. Nationally, she was ranked second in hammer and weight throw, third in discus and fifth in shot put and javelin.

Bambrick, a member of Port Williams-based Launchers Athletics, was a national champion in Para F37 shot put in 2014.

His personal best throw of 11.91 metres was just 0.03 metres off the current national record in the event. He is currently ranked 12th in the world in Para F37 shot put, and also competed in discus.

Albert, the founding coach of Valley Athletics, specializes in coaching Paralympic athletes, and is a former national Paralympic athletics coach. Pam LeJean and Casey Perrin, two of his club members, nominated him for the award.

Albert was cited for the eight high performance or developmental athletes he coaches, including LeJean, who merited her own award.

LeJean, like Albert, is a Halifax-area resident. She finished the year ranked first in the world in her age and skill category in discus, and second in both javelin and shot put.

She was first at nationals this past year in shot put and javelin, and set Canadian records in all three events.

Kings county resident Ben Brown, a wheelchair athlete who placed third at nationals in the 100-metre sprint and currently holds three provincial records, is also one of Albert’s athletes.

Brown recently received his national development card for a second straight year.
