MIDDLETON, N.S. — Jaymee-Lynne Dowell thought she was ready, but the rush of shoppers May 1 at the new shop in Middleton was maybe more than she anticipated.
It was busy!
More Than A Label Consignment will help people labeled with disabilities an opportunity to gain workplace experience so they can eventually get jobs that pay real wages – just like everybody else.
She’s the founder and executive director of Inclusive Opportunities Association and this was the day she was waiting for.
“It’s National Inclusive Employment Day,” she said. “I’m opening a consignment store to promote inclusive employment for individuals labeled with a disability.”
Public support for the project was evident in the number of people coming and going all morning and into the afternoon.
“It’s been almost non-stop,” Dowell said at noon. “We have had to re-stock the shelves probably three or four times. We’ve been running everywhere. It’s been amazing, honestly. We haven’t stopped all day.”
The dozen or so volunteers and staff sold consignment items, donated items, and 50/50 tickets, tickets on a Mother’s Day basket, and made $300 on a barbecue outside. They also sold t-shirts.
“A lady brought us flowers this morning, and a congratulations card,” Dowell said. “Everyone’s saying how amazing this is and how they’re behind us 100 per cent on our venture, and they’re supporting us, so that’s good.”
Local MLA and Premier Stephen McNeil sent over a certificate from the House of Assemble. And West Nova MP Colin Fraser sent a certificate of congratulations.
“No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burdens of another,” said the premier. “Thank you for all you do in our community.”
