The Greenwich-based business won the inaugural Burger Wars competition that saw 23 Annapolis Valley restaurants going order-to-order for the sake of charity.

The participating businesses added a special Burger Wars entry to the menu throughout the month of April. One dollar from every Burger Wars order was donated to the Kings County-based charity Campaign for Kids.

Patrons were then asked to go online and vote for their favourite burger.

Campaign for Kids representatives Laura Churchill Duke and Andy Forse surprised Old Orchard Inn chef Joe Gillis at his workplace May 6 to present him with a Burger Wars trophy.

“The overwhelming favorite burger for 2016 was the Old Orchard Inn’s,” said Forse.

The Old O’s contender, the Sriracha Burger, featured local ground beef from Oulton’s, spinach, tomato pickled red onions, melted cheese, a toasted bun, spicy sriracha aioli and - the kicker - a breaded pickle. It will remain on the menu after its success with Burger Wars.

“The kitchen (staff) combined all of their talents together and we came up with this,” said Gillis.

“We’re very happy about participating in the program. When you help a kid out, you help a family out, when you help a family out, you help a community.”

It’s estimated Burger Wars will bring in more than $4,000 for Campaign for Kids once all of the restaurants complete their tallies.

“It raises money for kids in financial need in Kings County,” said Churchill Duke.

The event exceeded expectations, said Forse.

“We got participation from most of the restaurants we could think of.”

Some business owners even asked if the competition could be extended, Forse added.

“People heard about restaurants they’d never heard of before and tried them out. It was just an overwhelming success… they had a big boost in sales.”

Campaign for Kids members are already planning for Burger Wars 2017.
