SLIDESHOW - Hantsport celebrates holiday season with tree lighting, shopping party

HANTSPORT, N.S. - Santa arrived at the haven of hospitality in style. Leaving his sled at the North Pole, he rode in on one of the Hantsport Fire Department’s fire trucks, with lights and sirens putting Rudolph’s famous nose to shame.

Dozens of children and their families arrived to greet him prior to the lighting of the tree next to the municipal office on Main Street.

West Hants councillor Paul Morton said getting the tree was a last minute miracle, saying they didn’t know if a tree would be coming at all.

“The tree lighting in Hantsport has been going on for a long time,” Morton said. “It shows that there’s still some community fun going on here. It brings people together.”

The Valley Credit Union provided funds towards the tree and municipal staffer Kerry Richie took care of the lights.

“I got on the phone and got one delivered,” he said. “I’m glad they stepped up.”

Following the tree lighting the community kept things going with a shopping party, with food and hot cocoa on offer along Main Street.
