A Greenwood businesswoman is inviting individuals and local businesses to use her parking lot for a Trunk or Treat on Halloween.
Elizabeth Stevens, the owner of Fresh from the Oven Family Dining in Greenwood, said she loves Halloween. But she is concerned families in rural communities are losing interest in the annual fright fest because of the walking distance between homes.
Stevens is hosting her second Trunk or Treat event on Halloween in the parking lot of her business located at 678 Central Ave, Greenwood. The parking lot will become a meeting place for people who want to give out treats and families wanting a convenient and safe place for their kids to go trick or treating.
“A lot of people love Halloween as I do,” the grandmother from Melvern Square said.
“We live in the country where not a lot of kids visit our homes. So, I am giving those people the opportunity to come and set up in my parking lot. They can decorate their trunk, and they will be able to dress up in costume and give the kids candy from the trunk of their car.”
There is no fee to participate. However, participants need to pre-register their vehicles by Oct. 28, and only pre-packaged candy can be given out from the trunk. Home-made treats are not allowed.
No electricity will be provided during the event.
However, Stevens will provide free hot chocolate, and the best-dressed trunk will receive a gift certificate for a 10-inch cheesecake from her shop.
Stevens said pre-made kits to decorate your trunk are available at a discounted price at Michaels craft supply store in New Minas.
Local businesses are invited to donate candy even if they are not planning to participate.
Stevens said Trunk or Treat is like bringing Halloween to the kids.
“It is the new way of trick or treating for kids, especially kids from rural communities. It’s like visiting a subdivision in one stop,” Stevens said.
