KINGSTON, N.S. — His dream is to work as a backup dancer for famous musical talents on world tours and the road began right here in the Annapolis Valley.
19-year-old Isaac Abriel of Kingston has always had a natural love of dance. As a child, he used to “dance around the house” and he later got involved with Precision Dance Association in his home community. He danced as an extracurricular activity and in competitions.
Abriel said he really isn’t into other sports but he likes the athleticism involved in dance.
“I’m also very artistic and I like that you can express yourself through movement creatively and through choreography,” Abriel said.
He graduated last year from West Kings District High School and applied to the Mather Dance Company’s Bridge Into The Industry program in Los Angeles, California, where he was accepted.
Abriel got to train under some of the most talented teachers and choreographers in North America and alongside some of the most talented dancers.
Only 16 dancers were accepted into the exclusive program this past year. The application process involved authoring a compelling essay, demonstrating his ability to learn multiple dance styles, delivering a strong solo and mastering choreography.
He greatly enjoys choreographing routines. While he has been home, he has been preparing some competition pieces for Precision for next year.
He has almost finished the 11-month program. He is beginning the process of getting his visa and, eventually, his green card so he can work professionally south of the border.
“Clear Talent Group in Hollywood is hoping to represent me once I get a visa,” Abriel said.
He has been trying to book dance jobs on cruise ships because a visa isn’t required. He recently got a call back from Princess Cruises but he was at home in Nova Scotia and couldn’t make it.
His main goal is to become a backup dancer for musical artists on world tours. He is currently into Lady Gaga and said dancing for her would be the ultimate.
Abriel’s favourite style of dance is lyrical because of the emotion and storytelling involved. This particular style combines ballet and jazz technique.
