AYLESFORD LAKE, NS - Following an intensive training camp at Brigadoon Village and Aylesford Lake, members of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service (NSLS) are ready to return to supervised beaches.
More than 80 lifeguards from across Nova Scotia participated in the four-day training camp, which ran from June 22 to 26. Beginning on June 29, the NSLS will begin supervision at 23 beaches. Supervision runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Aug. 25.
Training included technical and physical skills such as water rescue, CPR/First Aid, running, swimming and board rescue. NSLS director Paul D’Eon said he is looking forward to another successful season for lifeguards across the province.
“We are hoping for another safe season but are preparing staff for any incident that could occur,” D’Eon said.
This is the 47th season for the NSLS. All staff must meet the National Lifeguard Waterfront Standard of the Lifesaving Society Canada. This will prepare them for their multi-faceted roles on the province’s beaches. The training also included team building activities to develop team skills with fellow lifeguards.
The NSLS is a contracted service to provide beach supervision for provincial and municipal governments and is operated by the Life Saving Society Nova Scotia Branch.
