NORTH RIVER, N.S. — Things didn’t quite go the way he hoped last week, but Ian Stewart hasn’t given up on reclaiming a world record.
The North River used to hold the Guinness World record for 94 catches while juggling running chainsaws. He held the record from 2011 until last July, when a man in Finland (Janne Mustonen) set a new record of 98.
On Aug. 23, in downtown Truro, Stewart attempted to beat that record but was only able to equal it.
“I’m in good practice now so I’d like to try again before winter,” he said. “I’ve had people ask me if I want to go to certain events to try again, but I’m not sure where I’ll do it yet.”
One of his problems with the recent attempt was that a saw stalled after he’s reached more than 70 catches.
“When that happens, it goes sideways, and you can’t continue,” he said. “I took a short break and started over but it’s difficult to go for a second round after going that far. My arms were starting to get a bit on the tired side.”
Stewart’s not able to practice much when it’s very hot or cold. He once did a demonstration for someone in the cold and, because he can’t wear gloves while juggling, had trouble moving his fingers later.
“Even though I didn’t set a record on the last try, I’m so impressed with the way people supported me,” he added. “It’s great to have support from your home town.”
