AYLESFORD, NS - After more than three decades, the Aylesford and District Lions Red Cross swim program is still going strong.
Held at the Klahanie Kampground pool in Aylesford, this summer season saw 150 participants ranging in age from three months old to adults register for the Learn to Swim program. Certified lifeguard instructors Merissa MacNeil and Makayla Harnish are considered the backbone of the program, with administrative and other support provided by the Lions Club.
The pool was built thanks to fundraising efforts by the Aylesford and District Lions Club and to this day the club covers all maintenance costs associated with the pool. The club also subsidizes the program to keep registration fees affordable to families.
More than 2,800 registrants have learned life-saving skills through the program since its inception. The program continues thanks to a co-operative effort by the current camp ground owners and the Lions Club. The annual Learn to Swim program closes with a year-end barbecue and pool party, held this year on Aug. 24.
The campground owners have said on many occasions that people come up to them and say, “I learned to swim in that pool.” The program will run again in the summer of 2019.
