KENTVILLE NS – Reservists from two provinces are taking part in 36 Canada Brigade Group Soldier Skills Competition at Camp Aldershot this weekend.

More simulated blood was needed for the first aid exercise at Camp Aldershot April 22 to make this soldier look badly wounded.

The two-day competition, said assistant public affairs officer Lieutenant Felix Odartey-Wellington, provides an opportunity for brigade members to practice core soldier skills.
The concurrent round-robin style exercise allows those participating to take part in a competitive tactical environment, said Major Jason Doyle, while promoting esprit de corps.
“It’s a hard, but fun type of event,” Doyle noted, “a challenge that builds basic solider skills.”
Participants are being tested in five activities, such as field craft, patrolling, explosive threat and hazard awareness, target shooting and combat first aid.
Each group moves through the woods at Camp Aldershot between challenges. Odartey-Wellington explained that the skills sets could have an expanded use during a natural disaster.
A medical doctor based in Prince Edward Island, Trevor Jain, who was recently deployed to the Middle East, supervised some of the first aid challenge. As surgeon for the brigade, the Coldbrook native said he was glad he could take part in the exercise.
Saturday night, Doyle said, the nine groups take part in a night patrol, then set up an Arctic tent and take shifts overnight keeping watch.
First thing on April 23 they will run an obstacle course, run 3.5 km and shoot rounds on the range.
An awards ceremony will be held to determine which group takes home one of the two trophies at the completion of the competition on Sunday.
The winning team will be presented with the Henley Boot Trophy, while the top infantry team will be awarded the Infantry Trophy.
